3D printing in FFF technology is a technique that, thanks to its properties, is increasingly used in medicine. 3D printing is used in preparation for surgery – precision-printed models, such as the spine, allow surgical analysis that reduces the risk of mistakes during the operation. 3D printing is also in education – anatomical models whose short series production using traditional methods would be unprofitable. 3D printers change this situation.
The devices also allow innovative medical tools to be prototyped and allow the creation of parts for wheelchairs that are adapted to the individual needs of patients. Some 3D printing filaments meet the requirements of sterile biocompatible materials, so this production technique can be used to create surgical aids.
Printed guides for use during operations and other support tools, in contrast to standard (aluminium, titanium), allow for this degree of adaptation to the individual anatomy of the patient in order to obtain the most accurate localisation of actions needed during the treatment. Models of bones or other elements can be used to test the best places for stabilising implants, plates and screws on the bone surface. It produces better postoperative results.
